Glass Museum Engagement Photography

This Glass Museum Engagement photography session with Emily and Tim took place at the Museum of Glass and the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma, Washington.  First of all, we started at the history museum, which is run by the Washington State Historical Society .  I love the architecture of the building, but most of all I love when I can get a photo without a bunch of random people in the background.

Shooting in the Pacific Northwest is very different from shooting in Southern California.  I’m used to working with and around the sun a lot more.  It is February on the west coast of Washington so the skies are much more dramatic and moody.  The downside is that now I’m working around the rain and trying to keep my equipment dry.  We lucked out on the weather with this shoot.  Seems like it didn’t really start raining until we were walking back to the car.

I am excited to incorporate more of this dramatic feeling in my photographs in the coming years now that I am a Washington State resident again.  Being surrounded by all the greenery and mountains, like Mt. Rainier, feels good.

Museum of Glass

Next, we headed over to the Museum of Glass, which was pioneered by the great American glass sculptor, Dale Chihuly.

I think everything about the Glass Museum is cool.  The Crystal Towers in the center of the Chihuly Bridge of Glass are incredibly captivating and a fun spot for engagement pictures.

The Venetian Wall is a romantic place to take pictures.  There are 109 glass blown sculptures from 3 different Chihuly’s series: Venetians, Ikebana, and Putti.

We stopped for a few more pictures around Martin Blank’s Fluent Steps which consequently is part of the museum’s permanent outdoor art collection.  As a result, the art instillation consists of 754 individually hand-sculpted pieces of glass.
