This Tacoma engagement session was at the Museum of Glass and the Washington State History Museum owned and operated by the Washington State Historical Society. Kelly and Zack are getting married this month and we are so excited to shoot their wedding at the Attic in Sumner, Washington. Kelly and I went to college together and she was always the life of the party. She saw my photography on Instagram. Recently, I’ve been trying to post a photo everyday on Instagram and I’ve done a decent job at keeping it up so far.
First, Kelly’s daughter joined us at first and she looks just like her momma… beautiful.
Lamp posts by Union Station are so cool! Tacoma has lots of great architecture downtown. I took a Museum and Monuments class while studying abroad in London. Most of all, I learned some about architectural styles like baroque, gothic, victorian…etc. That was 14 years ago now… yikes. My guess is that these lamp posts have neo-gothic influence, but regardless of what style they are, they’re cool. Seems like I’ve been working to capture natural and architectural elements in a romantic and playful way when I’m shooting couples.
Museum of Glass
Founded in 2002, the Museum of Glass came to fruition while I was in college at PLU. Now, it’s hard to imagine Tacoma without it. It’s such a unique landmark. The idea for the Museum of Glass began in 1992 with Dr. Philip Phibbs and Dale Chihuly. Construction began in 2000. It was designed by Canadian architect Arthur Erickson. You can see more of his works at Artsy and even bid on them.
What I thought was going to be simple romantic shot focusing on the ring ended up taking on a life of it’s own. To me, Zack spontaneously going in to take a bite out of Kelly’s hand gives more life to this shot. Over the years I’ve discovered how to better capture all these incredible moments that happen in an instant. You have to be prepared, because recreating the moment will never give you the authentic reaction that grabbed your attention in the first place.
It was a cold day, with this warm couple. We are thrilled to be a part of documenting such an exciting time in their lives.
